About Me
Hi, Sgt. Mac Here! Welcome to macsmilitary.com.
I just retired, after nearly 40 years in the residential construction trades. But back in 1966, I was just one of many high school kids, trying to figure out what my future had in store for me. During those days, the Vietnam War was hot and heavy, and the draft hung over our heads like a lead weight. Was college in our future? Should we go to work and take our chances with the draft, or join a military branch and do our duty? In the end, I joined the Air Force. As it turned out, it was a good decision, but one that had a lot of twists and turns and bit of fate in getting there. You can read about it in my section titled, Air Force Days.
My interest in the military however, goes back to 1952. I was just five years old at the time, when I first learned about a grandfather I had never known. Showing me picture of him in his uniform, my mother informed me; Honey...this is your grandfather, Samuel Howard Hindman. He was in the Army during WWI and served in France.
Not long after that, I learned that my dad, was in WWII and served as a Navigation Instructor on various heavy bombers. Over the years, I have researched and written about his experiances.
At the age of 8 or 9, my Uncle Wally, told me a story that was the imputeus to research and write about our families military history. A book I am currently writing with all this information, is titled, The Seeds of History.
In 1966 I entered the Air Force. I spent my time as an Air Policeman, and was stationed overseas and in the U.S. A planned career in the Air Force was cut short, when I learned my dad, was seriously injured in a car accident. Family wanting me to come home, persuaded me to forego a planned re-enlistment, and I spent the next 35+ years in the construction business.
In 1985, a planned visit by my Uncle Wally, whom I mentioned above, was cut short, when he suddenly died of a heart attack. My planned research and subsequent questions about his naval service went unanswered until 2000, when I decided to research his career.
During the same year and for the next four years, I put all my research and writing down in a website, called Sgt. Mac's Military. About the same time, my mother presented to me, bags full of letters and some postcards from her dad-my grandad who had served in WWI. We now have a fine collection of this material which spans his entire time in a WWI Army Boot Camp and his short stint in France.
Since those days, other information has come forward about our ancestors. My mother, a geneology nut, has researched and compiled thick volumes on family dating back to the 1700's. I am currently in the process, of writing about their military experiances in the Revolutionary and Civil War.
Lastly, our middle son Scott, joined the Marine Corp's. He had tours of duty in the first Afghanistan and Iraq Wars, after 9/11. The whole family was and is extremely proud of his service. My arm twisiting to get him to talk about his experiances falls mostly on deft ears. I can't say I blame the kid. At any rate, hopefully I can add some facts here and there on his service.
