Capture of New Orleans: Gen. Winfield Scott had called for the blockade of Confederate ports along the Mississippi River in order to deny the Confederates food and supplies. A confederate naval counterattack attempted to drive off the Union navy in the Battle of the Head of Passes. Flag Officer David G. Farragut, undertook a counterattack. He entered the mouth of the Mississippi River and fought his way upriver, past two masonry forts at Jackson and St. Phillip. He captured New Orleans by April 25.

The Battle of Yorktown: As part of General McClellan's Peninusla Campaign, the Battle of Yorktown was fought from April 5 to May 4, 1862. Union Major General George McClellan's Army of the Potomac, encountered Major General John B. Magruder's small confederate force at Yorktown. McClellan suspended his march up the Peninsula toward Richmond and settled in for siege operations. Skirmishes were had between both sides, ending, when the Confederates finally deserted their positions and retreated towards Richmond.

May 31-June 1 1862: The Battle of Seven Pines aka Fair Oaks: The battle, was the culmination of an offensive up the Virginia Peninsula, by Union General George B. McClellan, in which the Army of the Potomac, reached the outskirts of Richmond. Both sides claimed victory, although they suffered equal casualties. McClellan's advance towards Richmond was halted as the Northern Virginia forces fell back to defensive positions near the city.

June 25-July 1 1862-The Seven Days Battles: The Seven Days Battles was a series of six major battles over seven days. Confederate General Robert E. Lee, drove the Union Army of the Potomac commanded by Gen. George B. McClellan, away from Richmond and back down the Virginia Peninsula. Several more years would pass, before the Union once again approached Richmond.

A New Union Army Commander: Major General Henry Halleck, was named general-in-chief of the Union Army, replacing General George B. McClellan.

August 28-30 1862-The Second Battle of Bull Run: Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, launched an offensive campaign against Union Maj. Gen. John Pope's Army of Virginia. Pope's army was defeated and Pope was relieved of command. Pope blamed Maj. General Fitz-John Porter for his defeat who was later court-martialed. Eight years later, Porter's sentence was commuted.

September 12-15, 1862-Harper's Ferry: Stonewall Jackson surprised unprepared Union Forces at Harper's Ferry and captured it, with very little effort. It was the largest surrender of Union forces during the Civil War, (12,419 men), and along with them, 13,000 small arms, 200 wagons, and 73 artillery pieces. Afterward s, Jackson was dispatched immediately, to join the Battle at Antietam.
